NGO provides free eye surgery in Mangochi
The Islamic Health Association of Malawi has provided free eye surgery to about 80 people from various traditional authorities (T/As) in Mangochi District.
Speaking on Wednesday when winding up the free medical services at Mangochi District Hospital, the association’s programme officer Mussah Chatuwa said the initiative sought to reach out to people with eye problems in the district.

He said: “This medical camp was for people with eye problems, especially from remote areas.
“It follows a similar initiative we conducted in October this year where we helped about 48 people with eye surgeries.”
Mussah said his organisation wants to see healthy people who can contribute towards the development of their households, communities and the country.
The hospital’s head of eye department Byson Kapatamoyo commended the organisation for the initiative.
“The problem of cataract or blindness is huge in our district. As a district, we are burdened with this and having partners such as the Islamic Health Association of Malawi is a relief,” he said.
One of the patients, Baraka Amidu from Kadyoloka Village in T/A Makanjira thanked the organisation for the initiative.
“I have been having an eye problem for over three years. Therefore, I was not productive. I can go back to resume my businesses now that I can see,” he said.
With funding from Barakah Charity, Islamic Health Association of Malawi conducted the exercise in partnership with Operation Eyesight Universal and the district hospital.
The outreach service cost K12 million.
